Jane D. Brown was a professor in the School of Media and Journalism at UNC-CH for 35 years where she studied sex, drugs and rock’n’roll — how adolescents learn about sexuality, violence, drugs, and unhealthy behaviors from the media. At UNC she served as chair of the Faculty Council and on many other committees and task forces. She was a co-founder of the program in Interdisciplinary Health Communication and continues to consult on research about effective ways to promote healthy behaviors. She currently is on the board of Planned Parenthood of South Atlantic and their Action Fund. She also serves on the board of Childfund International. Her husband, James Protzman, founded the blog BlueNC.com. They have two children and two grandchildren, all living near Chapel Hill.
