We do have some good news here in North Carolina: our Featured Candidates have helped break the Republican supermajority in the NC House and we have elected pro-choice Josh Stein to serve as Governor for the next four years!
This means that when NC Republicans try to pass anti-abortion legislation, Governor-Elect Stein will be able to veto it and Republicans will not have the votes to overturn his veto. NC will continue to be an abortion access point for the South, providing life-saving healthcare to thousands. This is because of our work to advance progressive women candidates who will champion reproductive freedom in office.
We endorsed nine Targeted Featured Candidates who were running in the most competitive legislative districts in the state. We’re thrilled to announce that the following Targeted Featured Candidates won their campaigns: Rep. Lindsey Prather, Rep. Laura Budd, and Sen. Lisa Grafstein held on to their seats and Beth Helfrich flipped a critical House seat in Mecklenburg County. Woodson Bradley also won her Senate race by a margin of 27 votes, pending a recount.
We’re SO PROUD of all of the women who ran for office to champion reproductive freedom this year. While we are disappointed we did not flip enough seats in the NC Senate to break the supermajority in that chamber, our candidates defended and flipped critical competitive seats across the state.
We also endorsed five amazing candidates running for the NC Council of State. We’re happy to share that Rachel Hunt was elected Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State Elaine Marshall was re-elected.
Finally, we also endorsed four new Recommended Featured Candidates who ran in solidly progressive districts and will be great additions to the NCGA. Congratulations to Sophia Chitlik, Aisha Dew, Julia Greenfield, and Monika Johnson-Hostler. Additionally, we’re proud of our incumbent Guardian Featured Candidates, who you can see on here.
Thank you so much for your support of Lillian’s List and our Featured Candidates.
