Why Women Must Run – Especially Now

April 7, 2025

In every chapter of our nation’s history, women have shown up – marching, organizing, voting, leading. But today, as our democracy faces unprecedented threats, as our rights are eroded piece by piece, and as voices of extremism grow louder, the need for women to run for office has never been more urgent.

At Lillian’s List, we believe in the transformative power of electing progressive women to public office. But this moment calls for more than belief – it demands bold, decisive action. We need women not just advocating from the sidelines, but *leading* at the table where decisions are made. From school boards to city councils, from state legislatures to Congress, we need women stepping up and stepping into their power.

Our fundamental rights are under attack. Abortion access is hanging by a thread in many states. LGBTQ+ rights, voting rights, and even the right to a a fair and honest education are on the chopping block. These are not abstract issues – they are deeply personal, and women understand what’s at stake because we live it everyday.

When women lead, policy changes. Women legislators are more likely to introduce and pass laws that support families, strengthen communities, and promote equity. They bring lived experience, collaborative leadership styles, and a fierce commitment to justice. And we don’t just need *any* women – we need progressive women who will fight for marginalized communities and push back against regressive policies.

Our democracy depends on more women being elected. Extremist candidates are winning seats in state legislatures and school boards, often because no one challenged them. Every office matters. Every vote matters. We must contest every seat and ensure that voters have a real choice – a progressive, qualified, values-driven choice.

At Lillian’s List, we train, support, and uplift women who are ready to run – and to win. We are proud to have helped elect women who are now championing reproductive freedom, public education, climate justice, and more. But we can’t do it alone. We need a movement of women ready to raise their hands, say “yes,” and lead.

If you’ve ever thought about running, I want you to hear this: you are ready! Your community needs you. Your voice matters. And we’re here to support you every step of the way.

These times are turbulent, yes. But they’re also filled with possibility. When women run, women win. And when women win, we all move forward.

Let’s build a future where our leadership isn’t the exception – it’s the rule.
